This is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read, and also one of the longest. It takes place in a US city, Bellona, that is somehow somewhere else entirely, and follows the main character, known only as "the kid," as he explores its subcultures. It questions gender, race, and sexuality, is full of sex and violence, and reads like poetry.
