This is an excellent collection that traces the arc of experimental styles throughout Kaithe Kollwitz's life. Kollwitz bridged the haunting, empathetic realism of the mid-19th century with the drama of European Modern expressionism. As a constant theme throughout her work, the body becomes the primary building block for compositional expression. The bodies of individual actors are balanced against the body politic with a masterful use of chiaroscuro, light and shadow, giving emotional and social weight to her subjects.
