Like his first novel, The White Tiger, Adiga writes here about the complexities of lief in neoliberal India. This work is a series of short stories, couched as a travel guide for a small (real) city in South India. The characters in each vignette are remarkably well developed and the piece is reminiscent of Naipaul's earlier work, Miguel Street. His stories also remind me of Flores Magon's fables of the working poor in Mexico. However Adiga's writing is far more beautiful, subtle, and always infused with very dark humor. As ethnography disguised as fiction, this novel is highly recommended.
